Caribbean Swells

Consistent, crowd-free, and yours.

The Bocas del Toro archipelago sits in the path of consistent Caribbean north swells. Old Man's Beach offers a forgiving, palm-lined wave for intermediate surfers. Carenero Point delivers faster, hollower reef breaks — reachable by water taxi in minutes. Bluff Beach, for the serious wave hunter, offers 5km of powerful exposed shore break. Boards and coaching available through the resort.

Best: Dec–Apr, Jul

Living Reef

Sea turtles before breakfast.

Cayo Coral — reachable in under 20 minutes by private boat — is among the finest snorkeling in all of Central America. Staghorn and brain coral rise in columns from white sand. Parrotfish, angelfish, nurse sharks, and sea turtles are year-round residents. Cayos Zapatillas, inside the national marine park, adds an uninhabited island and pristine shallows. Equipment provided.

Best: Jan–Mar, Sep–Oct

Sport fishing boat on the open Caribbean sea
Fish

Deep Caribbean Blue

Fish the same water Columbus described.

Offshore: yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, and the occasional marlin run close to the archipelago. Inshore and reef fishing yields snapper, grouper, and jack crevalle. A full-day private charter can be arranged through the resort — we work with local captains who have fished these waters for over 40 years. Catch-and-release or cook-and-eat, the choice is yours.

Best: Year-round (Dec–Apr offshore)

Light-dappled jungle trail in tropical rainforest
Hike

Primary Jungle

The trail where no one goes.

A short boat ride leads to Isla Bastimentos — a wild island of primary rainforest, rope bridges, and swimming holes. The cross-island trail connects Old Bank village to Wizard Beach through a canopy alive with howler monkeys, three-toed sloths, and poison dart frogs. Guided half-day and full-day hikes available. Cultural visits to the Ngäbe indigenous community can be combined.

Best: Year-round (dry gear May–Nov)

Tropical waterfall cascading into a jungle pool
Waterfall

Hidden Falls

Cold water, no coordinates shared.

Bahía Honda's professional trail system leads through thick jungle to the finest waterfall in the entire archipelago — a multi-tiered cascade into a freshwater pool, surrounded by towering heliconia and the sound of parrots. The Naso Kingdom on the mainland adds a river journey, guided jungle trek, and El Rayo waterfall. Pack a towel.

Best: Year-round

ATV riding through jungle terrain

Jungle Corridors

Where the roads end, the trail begins.

Flying Pirates ATV tours take you through primary jungle corridors on Isla Colón to La Piscina — a remote, turquoise natural swimming lagoon completely unreachable on foot. Four-hour guided rides cross elevated jungle terrain, traverse Bluff Beach, and stop at local fruit farms. No previous ATV experience required. Private tours available for island guests.

Best: Year-round (Dec–Mar preferred)

The quieter
wonders.

Island Hopping

The archipelago has more than 200 islands and cays. A full day on a private panga with a local captain covers Cayos Zapatillas, Cayo Coral, Red Frog Beach, and Starfish Beach in a single unhurried loop.

Wildlife & Dolphins

Dolphin Bay is home to a documented resident population of 37 bottlenose dolphins. July to October brings humpback whale mothers and calves. Four sea turtle species nest here March through September. Bioluminescence tours run on new moon nights.

Cultural Moments

The Ngäbe community on Isla San Cristóbal offers cacao-to-chocolate tours. The Afro-Caribbean village of Old Bank, Bastimentos, is a rare living example of undiluted West Indian Caribbean culture — calypso, guari-guari Creole, and rondón cooked from scratch.
